Data services to the Search and Rescue community

The METSAR project will investigate the feasibility of developing and demonstrating a new concept to the Search and Rescue (SAR) community. Using Satellite communications, satellite AIS (S-AIS), satellite METOCEAN and optical satellite imagery data, as well as Global Positioning System data, the project will look at establishing a sustainable service to deliver the best possible data services to the SAR community.

Improving Safety at Railway Level Crossings

In 2018, 253 level crossing users were killed in railway fatalities with 290 seriously injured in the EU. ESA-coordinated LeCross based on satellite navigation and communication data aims to use satellite machine-to-machine services and train positioning data to improve safety at railway level crossings.​

In 2018, over 335 000 hectares of forest across Europe were destroyed in fires. The ESA-backed SFEDONA project provides a complete end-to-end fire detection and alerting service based, inter alia, on satellite communications and terrestrial optical cameras and sensors.

Solaris S-band - the Future of Mobile Content

The project, which is part of ESA's "Newcomers" initiative of the ARTES 3-4 Programme, is aimed at developing, integrating and validating a set of mobile applications onboard of vehicles such as cars, coaches and trucks, using the S-Band delivery platform of Solaris on the Eutelsat W2A satellite. The mobile applications will allow the reception of geo-localised contents such as traffic information, weather alerts, route planning and tourism related content, in association with specific news broadcasting.

Based on EO, SatNav and SatCom data, SELIAT stands for the feasibility study Safe Emergency Landing in Alpine Terrain. It has investigated a service in aviation that shall provide geographic information about suitable landing sites to support off-field landings in alpine areas with difficult terrain. This information will be available to pilots in their cockpit.
