The TIGER Initiative, launched in 2002 in response to the Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), focuses on improving Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) in Africa. TIGER aims to overcome key challenges in collecting, analyzing, and using water-related geospatial data by leveraging the advantages of Earth Observation (EO) technology.

TIGER has supported capacity building and development projects in over 42 African countries, benefiting more than 150 water authorities and research institutes, with a total investment exceeding €11 million. It is endorsed by AMCOW (African Ministerial Council on Water), and guided by an international steering committee including partners such as the AUC, UNESCO, UNECA, Ramsar, and several African national agencies.
