Integration of Soil Moisture in desert locust preventive control systems

SMELLS has implemented an innovative approach to combine Sentinel-1 SAR data with thermal disaggregated SMOS-derived soil moisture to derive a soil moisture product at both high-spatial and high-temporal resolution to provide a new tool for decision-makers in the Desert locust preventive control system. SMELLS has been developed and demonstrated together with FAO and several national locust entities in West Africa.

By 2025, about 1.8 billion people will be living in regions or countries with absolute water scarcity. Using EO information and services, the ESA-coordinated EO4SD initiative supports international development assistance by helping countries to better measure and manage their water resources.
