Recycling of water previously used for washing or food praparation

A recycling system for ‘grey water’ – water previously used for washing or food preparation – has been operating for the last decade at the French–Italian Concordia base in Antarctica. The multistep recycling process is based on a ceramic honeycomb peppered with holes 700 times finer than a strand of human hair followed by a pair of membranes that yield clean water.

Fuel cells powering inner-city vehicles

The purpose of this project is to power inner-city delivery cars using pollution-free fuel cell technology (generating electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen), a technology already explored by ESA for satellites and robotic missions to Mars. Benefits of fuel cell vehicels include quiet, zero-emission vehicles for sensitive traffic areas, smaller vehicles that can navigate narrow and congested streets, while reducing noise and pollution and faster refuelling and lighter weight of fuel cell tanks.
