Orbit Guardian for inland water quality monitoring

According to the UN, only 60% of domestic wastewater is safely treated worldwide. Orbit Guardian helps countries improve water quality monitoring by integrating satellite data into national systems, strengthening capacities to protect freshwater resources.

Orbit Guardian is a project implemented in partnership with UNEP GEMS/Water and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Its main goal is to demonstrate how EO-enabled platforms—specifically the 360blue data exploitation platform—can be leveraged to seamlessly integrate satellite-based water quality data into national monitoring systems.

Orbit Guardian strengthens national capacities to monitor freshwater systems using cost-effective Earth Observation solutions. By linking EO insights with global indicator frameworks, the project enables countries to better safeguard water resources.

3.9 Substantially reduce the number of deaths and illnesses from hazardous chemicals and air, water and soil pollution and contamination
