EO-NOVA – Evaluating the potential of emerging EO sensor platforms for novel value-added commercial applications

The emerging new technology shaking up the commercial EO (Earth Observation) market is the growth of new sensor platforms (e.g. microsatellites fleet constellations) along with new business models as well as the availability of space-based video observations. Both options are now operational and provide potentially a massive new market that expand the uses for commercial EO satellite data into new sectors. The many new microsatellite missions, ongoing investments as well as recent commitments of international companies, urge traditional EO service providers to consider the technology as a major new driver of the application market.

The project delivered:
1) New knowledge about the technological capabilities and associated conditions: Background research on EO sensors, ground stations, cloud processing capacity, showing the potential of the data sources
2) Technical Evaluation and Validation of static EO imagery & satellite video data, allowing a further understanding of commercial usability, possibilities and limits
3) Application & Market Potential assessment to identify traditional and new markets and the top 5 related sectors (and related applications): Disaster monitoring and response, Agriculture, Industry & Trading, Infrastructure & Logistics, Security
4) Feasibility for commercial utilisation of the identified EO applications including a risk analysis to prospect possible risks of investment
