Monitoring, Management and Operations in light of Wildlife in Aerodrome Environments

Between 2008 and 2015, the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) 97 751 wildlife strike reports. The ESA-backed WAMMO project uses EO and navigation satellite data to enable airports to better detect wildlife activity and tackle potential threats, improving aviation safety.

THE WAMMO product aims at enabling airports to better detect wildlife activity and potential safety threat through the integration of bird radar and EO data. The product aims at helping wildlife teams at airports to improve their efforts in bird control and wildlife management. The product targets several users from the aviation industry such as airports operators, on-the-ground workers, civil aviation authorities and wildlife management teams. The service uses multiple EO and navigation satellites' technologies such as SAR and multispectral images to aid in the monitoring of changes in ecosystems and landscapes, VHR satellite images to monitor airports surroundings and identifying habitat types, and GNSS to guide bird controllers to areas with identified bird activity.
