Commercial climate service 

Each year, floods cause over €35 billion in damage around the world. ESA-backed River Nexus uses GNSS, satellite communications and EO services to establish a network of energy-independent measurement stations, improving early warning systems and resilience to water-related hazards.​

The River Nexus project's objective is to tackle climate change effects causing water-related disasters and destroying food supplies through the establishment of a network of 2,200 energy-independent satellite-based measuring stations. This network will provide a hybrid solution of products and services urgently needed by local communities like ice for food preservation, and river data for real-time flood warnings and water management. The project focuses on the tropical Rain Belt Region because its population is one of the most vulnerable to climate change effects. The service mainly targets riverside communities in the Equatorial areas, aiming to improve their resilience to water-related hazards, and their food supply. Main users are water authorities or national and local hydrometeorological service providers; international organisations such as WMO and UNESCO Water; environmental scientists and hydrologists; insurance companies; local population; and dairy and fish cooperatives. The service uses GNSS, SatCom as well as EO data.
