Innovative Solutions for on-board Communications

The project is aimed at realising an Internet Protocol (IP) -based voice communication system allowing users in isolated areas (e.g. on board ships, airplanes or working in oil rigs) to keep using their own phone number while avoiding high roaming costs. The innovative communication system is based on an international patented technology for which the proposing consortium has an exclusive use license, and it makes usage of satellite telecommunications (VoIP over satellite) to enable ubiquitous coverage. Through the adoption of a very efficient audio coding, the solution operates with very low bandwidth and is able to serve in a cost-effective way several concurrent phone calls.
