Micro renewable grid for rural indian areas

Around 30 million people in India did not have access to electricity in 2019. ESA-sponsored MOWGLI aims to use EO, telecommunication and navigation satellite technologies to optimise microgrid life cycles, enhancing access to electricity and renewable energy sources in rural India.

The MOWGLI service is a satellite-based product aiming at providing a set of services for optimal microgrid planning, designing, and operations and maintenance (O&M) applications in urban and rural areas of developing countries. The product particularly focuses on rural Indians areas. The service targets the whole rural microgrid community such as the decision makers, the microgrid designers and developers, the microgrid owner operators and the end-users benefiting of high-quality and reliable energy availability at reasonable costs. The service uses a plethora of space assets: EO satellites used as a remote and reliable source of data for energy assessments, real-time monitoring and forecasting inputs; telecommunications satellites used as complementing solutions where local connectivity is not reliable or not available at all; and navigation satellites used to pinpoint the geolocation of local mobile-phone users and to understand their specific behaviour and needs.
