Improving Safety at Railway Level Crossings

In 2018, 253 level crossing users were killed in railway fatalities with 290 seriously injured in the EU. ESA-coordinated LeCross based on satellite navigation and communication data aims to use satellite machine-to-machine services and train positioning data to improve safety at railway level crossings.

The LeCross study identifies and assesses the feasibility of an integrated service solution to improve the safety at railway level crossings by supporting prevention of accidents and improving emergency operations. Based on SatNav and SatCom data, the LeCross solution, developed during the course of the study, utilises satellite machine-to-machine services and train positioning data to offer a cost effective solution to improve safety at currently unprotected level crossings.
