Use of satellite communication technologies & wireless terrestrial technologies for crisis management

The objectives of the ECM-GR project were to design an integrated system that combines the use of satellite communication technologies with wireless terrestrial technologies to be demonstrated for crisis management. A prototype crisis management system was designed for civil protection departments to be used in the case of major earthquake incidents. The project demonstrated the benefits derived from the integration of satellite communication technologies and terrestrial wireless communication technologies with GIS (Geographic Information System) technologies for the decision makers and the field operators that participate in the crisis management activities. An integrated system was designed that provides similar crisis management services in cases of other natural or man-made disasters. The project also provided rapid and efficient data dissemination from decision makers to on-field operators and vice versa and established reliable and efficient collaborative working sessions between decision makers and on-field operators.
