A self-lubricating metal matrix composite

A self-lubricating metal matrix composite based on copper (CuMMC) tested by Europe’s space industry is being offered for transfer to the watch, automotive and oil and gas industries. The composite has been tested for ESA by Aerospace & Advanced Composites. The results showed dimensionally stable cages with almost no wear, and good performance at 300°C with additional coatings – compared to competitor materials that operate to a maximum of 250°C. CuMMC is currently being marketed by ESA-funded Technology Transfer broker Brimatec.
