Concordia Station (Antarctica)
A unique location to conduct research for extreme climate conditions & environments
Because of its seclusion, the polar bases on Antarctica, namely Concordia station, offer scientists a unique location to conduct research in many disciplines. The station, its extreme environment and its location are so unique that we have been using Concordia’s unique environment to prepare for future human exploration missions, investigating things such as coping with stress, changes in the immune system, and alterations in circadian rhythms. ESA runs the research in cooperation with the builders and operators of Concordia, the French Polar Institute and the Italian Antarctic Programme. So every year since 2005, we have been sponsoring a dedicated research doctor to implement experiments for us or the European scientists investigating topics that are related to missions long-duration exploration missions. Combined with data from ISS and other platforms, this research has been really important in helping to understand how humans adapt to extreme conditions. In addition to the human research that we do on Concordia station, we are also testing new techinolgies at that station.
