activity - Mon, 14/04/2025 - 10:31

According to the UN, over 80% of marine pollution originates from land-based sources, with nutrient runoff being one of the primary contributors to coastal eutrophication.EU-Mon helps countries monitor coastal eutrophication by using Earth Observation data to improve reporting systems and support sustainable coastal management.

The project aims to enable the integration of EO-derived indicators into national SDG reporting systems, specifically targeting  Coastal Eutrophication. By deploying innovative data processing and analytics workflows on existing EO platforms, EU-Mon supports countries in adopting cost-effective, scalable EO solutions for coastal monitoring.

EU-Mon demonstrates how EO data can be translated into actionable environmental statistics, empowering countries to meet their international reporting obligations while improving local capacity for coastal ecosystem management. It showcases a model of collaboration between space industry, environmental authorities, and statistical institutions.
