According the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, scientific estimates show that 64 % of the world's wetlands have disappeared since 1900. Yet wetlands store 30% of all land-based carbon and provide vital ecosystem services.

The EO4WetlandsInventory project develops and validates Earth Observation (EO) tools to automatically map, classify, and monitor wetland ecosystems, including by type and over time. Working with partners like Ramsar STRP, UNEP, IUCN, and GEO Wetlands, the project supports countries in creating EO-based national wetland inventories and contributes to regional and global wetland extent datasets. Solutions are being tested in pilot countries (Italy, Algeria, Kenya, Colombia) and aligned with international typologies like Ramsar and IUCN GET.
