FOREST MANAGEMENT

Earth Observation for Sustainable Forest Management

activity - Mon, 14/04/2025 - 10:09

Forests cover about 31% of the Earth’s land surface, yet over 10 million hectares are lost annually due to deforestation and degradation. The project helps fight deforestation by using satellite data to monitor forest health and support sustainable forest management.

This initiative is focused on developing and demonstrating innovative Earth Observation (EO) methodologies to support progress toward sustainable forest management.

The project delivers EO-based indicators that assess:

  • Forest Condition Monitoring (FCM)

  • Forest Change due to Erosion / Landslide Risk (FER)

  • Above-Ground Biomass Stock (AGB)

  • Forest Landscape Metrics (FLM)

These indicators are crucial for tracking forest health, structure, biomass dynamics, and threats such as erosion or land degradation, particularly in vulnerable forest areas.

The project enhances the ability of countries and organizations to monitor forest sustainability with high accuracy and transparency using EO technologies. By producing actionable forest indicators and engaging directly with local stakeholders, it contributes to evidence-based forest policies and supports countries in reporting on their environmental commitments.
