Space-based Earth Observation Solutions Applied to Marine and Terrestrial First Nations Traditional Territories

activity - Fri, 09/06/2023 - 11:15

Using Earth Observation to assist indigenous peoples monitor their traditional territories

Vertex developed new environmental solutions relevant to indigenous and coastal communities through analyses of Earth Observation (EO) big data, particularly as they relate to:

Overall monitoring of First Nations Traditional Territories (marine and terrestrial); nearshore habitat resilience; marine habitat health, specifically related to fish stocks and water quality; coastline conditions (sea-level rise); marine vegetation, specifically related to presence and health of kelp and eelgrass beds and their impact on marine organism habitats; presence of marine mammals and their interaction with coastal habitats; terrestrial vegetation and associated land cover and land use types related to urban development, and their impact on the marine habitat (coastal pollution through wastewater discharge).
