SISMA
Space innovation system to monitor animals
The SISMA2 project aims at implementing, deploying and testing on a large scale a cost-effective satellite-based solution for herd management data collection and sharing. The service targets three layers of users involved in the herd management: first herders, agricultural enterprises, natural reserves and nomads; then health officials and veterinarians; and finally government agencies, scientists and consultancies. The service uses several space assets in order to overcome the difficulties faced in certain locations such as large herding areas, weakness of terrestrial communication and low population density. It mainly uses GNSS to get reference timing and positioning, Earth observation systems for seamless mapping of the herds’ habitat, and satellite communications.
