"Lesson‐3 - Lesson from Space" demonstrating various water properties via live ISS link
Education is a major focus during ESA Human Spaceflight missions with astronauts using the unique environment of the International Space Station to inspire students of all ages to follow science‐based subjects. The "Lesson‐3 - Lesson from Space" activity included a live link between primary school students with ESA astronaut Frank De Winne who gave a lesson about life on the ISS which included demonstrations of various water properties. Frank De Winne, being a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF Belgium, performed demonstrations of the basic physical properties of water in weightlessness in relation to the ongoing UNICEF WASH campaign. The three demonstrations were curriculum related activities and have been defined by HSF-CO educational experts. Frank De Winne performed these educational activities during an in-flight call from the Columbus module. As these activities are curriculum related, teachers performed the demonstrations in the classroom. On the HSF education portal, online lessons were developed by HSF-CO education expert. These were available together with the recording of Frank De Winne´s live-link in order for teachers around Europe to use this material during a lesson in the classroom. Students were thus able to compare the results of these demonstrations on the ISS and appreciate the different results obtained in weightlessness and on ground. The demonstrations descriptions were printed in the UNICEF school journal which got distributed to schools.
