BIGFE - Recording water quality and water area extent of inland waters by remote sensing.

In BIGFE, satellite products freely available from the European COPERNICUS satellite programme are processed, harmonised and validated for a selection of approx. 100 water bodies. Target variables are chlorophyll, turbidity, secchi depth, water temperature and cyanobacteria. Besides surface water quality, a new tool is developed for water surface area dynamics (WaterMaskAnalyzer).

Target:

3.9 Substantially reduce the number of deaths and illnesses from hazardous chemicals and air, water and soil pollution and contamination

6.1 By 2030, achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all

6.3 Improve water quality ... halving the proportion of untreated wastewater and substantially increasing recycling and safe reuse

6.5 By 2030, implement integrated water resources management at all levels, including through transboundary cooperation as appropriate

6.6 By 2020, protect and restore water-related ecosystems, including mountains, forests, wetlands, rivers, aquifers and lakes
