Improvement of wildFIRE detection by combining sentinel observations with plume backtrackings from a dispersion MODEL.
The main goal of the project was to improve the detection capabilities of wildfires both in Austria and globally by using and combining observations of fire indicators from different Sentinel instruments (3 and 5P) with modelling techniques. The benefit to existing methods is that surface- and atmospheric observations from Sentinels-3 and -5P will be combined, with the aim to reduce the number of false alarms.
FIREMODE demonstrated the ability to spatially- and temporally allocate regions with elevated fire indicator observations, to their respective upwind wildfire source regions, by using a dispersion model in backward mode in combination with satellite observations.
