Drought and flood monitoring service for insurance

The DFMS4i project aims at developing products specifically targeted at agricultural insurance. DFMS4i products aim at providing timely access to geospatial information on drought and flood risks, compiled using on EO (Earth Observation) data (Sentinel), hydrology models, and in-situ data, in order to improve the robustness and affordability of insurance products. DFMS4i targets the agriculture insurance market in developing countries, with a focus on Uganda, in order to support smallholder farmers in transitioning out of basic subsistence farming to more resilient farming operations. Main users are insurance companies providing insurance services to agriculture industry stakeholders in developing countries, such as Ugandan smallholder farmers, farming cooperatives, agro-industry and the associated supply chain. The service uses EO data which allows to cover large areas and difficult to reach locations on a regular basis. Non-space alternatives such as aircraft, UAVs or sending people to evaluate the properties on a regular basis would be prohibitively expensive.
