Analysing biomarkers for monitoring airway inflammation
The "Airway Monitoring" experiment investigates and develops the use of a biomarker for monitoring airway inflammation in space. The Airway Monitoring experiment measures the level of nitric oxide in astronauts’ lungs, a naturally occurring molecule produced in the lungs to help regulate blood flow. Small amounts are normal, but excess levels indicate airway inflammation caused by environmental factors such as dust and pollutants or diseases like asthma. The experiment also has clinical applications for people on Earth.
