Analysis and characterisation of broadband solutions relying on satellite systems vs. terrestrial-only architecture
The aims of the Ocean project were to analyse and characterise broadband solutions relying on solutions involving satellite systems vs. terrestrial-only architecture. For each solution the topology needed to be analysed, its cost estimated, and its benefits assessed in terms of the quality of broadband delivered and the uptake to be expected. This work was carried out for three geo-economic regions, whereby access networks, as well as interconnection networks were scrutinised. Short-term (2015-2019) as well as long-term solutions (2020-2025) were sought and a numerical and visualisation tool which allows to elaborate sample test cases for communication purposes was developed. During the project a pilot measurement campaign was carried out to assess the broadband quality delivered by the satellite solution.
